2025 ERS Assets Claire Denny LI

We’re so pleased to welcome Claire Denny to the ERS family as our new Senior Underwriter for Schemes and Affinities. With over 20 years of experience in the motor insurance world, Claire brings deep underwriting knowledge, strong broker relationships, and a real passion for people and problem-solving. We sat down with Claire to get to know her better and hear about her journey so far.

Welcome to the team Claire, how did your career in motor insurance begin?

It all started when I took a temp job in document management at AXA over 20 years ago. That role led to a permanent position, and then I moved into underwriting full time in London. I then progressed to a Senior Underwriting role relatively quickly. It’s been quite a journey - the industry has changed a lot, and underwriting is far more data-driven now. But one thing that’s stayed constant for me is how much I value building strong relationships with brokers. That’s always been the most rewarding part of the job.

What was it about ERS that made you want to join?

I’d reached a point where standard motor had become too focused on pricing, and it left little room for true underwriting input. I missed the ability to apply judgment and expertise. ERS stood out as a specialist, with a great reputation and a more human, less corporate culture. That really appealed to me. I’ve not done a huge amount of non-standard motor in the past, so the chance to take on something new was exciting. I also knew James Mann from a previous role, and hearing his positive experience with ERS really reinforced that this was the right move for me.

How has your first week been?

It's flown by! The team has been incredibly welcoming and helpful - there’s a real sense of community here. I’ve been learning about the different schemes and affinity partnerships and getting to grips with how everything fits together. I’m working closely with Scott, Marc, and Alan, and I report into Mitul. I’m currently helping shape the underwriting guides that support our partners with delegated authority.

You clearly value broker relationships. Why are they so important to you?

For me, it’s simple - good underwriting happens when you truly understand what your broker partners need. In my previous roles, I worked with some of the biggest brokers, and the contact I had with them was always key to achieving the right outcomes. It’s about collaboration and trust. Even though I’ve only been at ERS a short time, it’s clear that strong broker relationships are at the heart of how the business works - and that’s a big reason why I joined.

What’s your take on the current motor market?

There’s definitely a shift happening. We’re seeing softening rates not just in standard motor, but also across non-standard lines. That tells you something about the shared pressures the market is under. There’s a lot of consolidation and change too, so being part of a well-established and focused motor insurer like ERS feels like the right place to be right now.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve picked up in your career?

Don’t have regrets. Regret what you didn’t do, not what you did. Be brave and trust yourself. That mindset helped me take a leap early in my career, moving from Ipswich to London. It was a big change at the time, but it opened so many doors for me. I’m glad I took that step.

And finally, how do you unwind outside of work?

I love trail running - I’ve even done a few ultramarathons, though I definitely prefer the ones with snack stops along the way! I also really enjoy cooking. And with two children, aged 11 and 13, life is always full of energy and activity. They keep me busy and grounded.

We’re thrilled to have Claire on board and can’t wait to see the impact she’ll make. Welcome to the team, Claire!
