2025 ERS Assets Will Miners LI

We recently caught up with William Miners, a new face in the London underwriting team, but a familiar one at ERS. William's journey started in operations before moving into underwriting, giving him valuable behind-the-scenes insight. Now in his latest role, he’s focused on using that experience to make life easier for our brokers.

Can you tell us about your journey to ERS? How did you find yourself working in insurance?

I started in insurance straight out of school, with a role at Allianz that sparked my interest in the industry. After some travelling and charity work, I went to Swansea University to study Law and Criminology, followed by a Master’s in International Commercial and Maritime Law. While studying, I joined ERS in operations. Balancing full-time work and study was tough but rewarding. After finishing my Master’s, I moved into underwriting with the London team.

What attracted you to ERS and the Non-Standard Motor team?

Working in operations gave me a great view of the business and showed me how unique our appetite and products are. I was introduced to ERS through a university event, and after visiting the Swansea office and meeting the team, I knew it was the right fit. The Non-Standard Motor team felt like a place I could grow.

What types of risks do you typically assess in this role?

I underwrite a wide range of non-standard risks – from modified vans and private vehicles to motorhomes and classic cars. No two risks are the same, which keeps things interesting and makes good use of both technical and people skills.

We prioritise building strong relationships with brokers. How has your experience been with this so far?

I do still deal with brokers in my current role, but the nature of the interaction has shifted. While in operations it was mainly at a policy level, now as an underwriter I engage with brokers at a higher level - whether that’s account, product, portfolio, or opportunity-based. We also work via software house platforms that make quoting much easier for brokers - it's efficient, user-friendly, and saves them time. I take pride in knowing the work I do helps make their experience smoother and more strategic.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My days are varied, which I enjoy. I’m involved in reviewing scheme specs, supporting the operations team, and working closely with validation. We also have regular pricing catch-ups to align on appetite and market trends. It’s a collaborative, evolving environment that helps us stay sharp.

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I’m a fully qualified football referee and have been officiating Sunday League matches for about six years. It’s a great way to stay involved in sport and adds a fun challenge to my weekends.
