Since 1946, ERS has had a clear purpose: to be a specialist motor insurer that understands risks others don’t, to work closely with brokers to deliver solutions where standard approaches fall short and to make your client’s motoring passions and livelihoods possible.
While the world, the motor market and technology have changed dramatically over those eight decades, our core purpose has remained constant.
Proud of our heritage
ERS was founded in the aftermath of the Second World War, at a time when mobility, rebuilding and innovation were critical to everyday life. Our very first risks repatriated munitions from French battlefields. From those early days, specialism sat at the heart of what we do, underwriting motor risks thoughtfully and with technical expertise.
Over the years, we’ve grown alongside our brokers, adapting to new vehicles, new customer behaviours, new risks and a completely different way of underwriting that incorporates real-time data to select and price the right risks, while continuing to focus on the areas of motor insurance where underwriting and claims expertise genuinely matters.

Today, ERS is proud to be recognised as a leading specialist motor insurer in the UK and we’re proud to be a Lloyd’s syndicate and the A+ rating our brokers and clients enjoy.
From complex and non-standard risks, through to emerging areas such as connected vehicles, autonomous technology and new mobility models, we remain focused on understanding and underwriting risks, rather than volume for volume’s sake. Over a third of brokers think of us first for their specialist motor risks.
Our success has never been about chasing every risk in the market. It has been about choosing the right risks, supporting brokers with clear underwriting appetite and combining data, technology and human judgement to deliver consistent outcomes.

If there is one constant across our 80-year history, it is the importance of brokers to ERS - we remain sure our motor only, broker only insurer strategy is the right one.
Our relationships with brokers are not transactional, they are collaborative. We listen, learn and we evolve our products and service based on real-world insight from those closest to clients and customers. That partnership approach has helped shape ERS into the insurer it is today, and it will continue to shape what we become next, as we develop the business to support the risks of the future.

While anniversaries are a moment to reflect, they are also a chance to look forward.
Throughout 2026, we’ll be marking our 80th year and celebrating our heritage - there will be plenty to look out for and we look forward to sharing more as the year unfolds.
Finally, I want to say a genuine thank you to our broker partners, customers and colleagues past and present who have played a part in ERS’ journey so far. Reaching 80 years is something we are immensely proud of, but we are even more excited about what lies ahead.
