Gary Tuppen blog

We’re delighted to welcome Gary back to ERS, returning to our Private Client team after gaining valuable experience in broking. With 15 years’ Private Client underwriting experience and a decade previously spent at ERS, Gary’s return strengthens our capability as we build towards our 2026 Private Client ambitions. For brokers, this means deeper underwriting expertise, sharper decision-making and a renewed focus on service where it matters most.

Back to what he does best

Gary’s return is rooted in his passion for underwriting. “Underwriting is what I’ve done for the last 15 years, and it’s where I’m at my best. There’s a structure to underwriting that really supports brokers. When I was broking, you know how you’d approach a risk as an underwriter, but you’re relying on others to fulfil that vision. Being back in underwriting means I can deliver that consistency directly.” Translating into clear appetite, confident decisions and fewer grey areas, especially on complex Prestige and Private Client risks.

What does this mean for brokers?

Gary’s recent time in broking gives him a refreshed, practical understanding of broker pressures:

  • The importance of fast, accurate turnaround
  • The challenge of presenting complex risks clearly
  • Balancing multiple roles and priorities across a brokerage

“Broking gave me a real appreciation of the hats brokers wear. From marketing and client service to accounting and risk presentation. It’s reinforced just how important accuracy and turnaround time are when you’re facing a client.”

That insight now feeds directly back into ERS, supporting better broker conversations, stronger submissions and more efficient underwriting outcomes.

What’s Gary most excited about?

The return couldn’t be better timed. Gary is particularly excited about:

  • The new Private Client proposition, enhancing our brokers access to ultra-high-net-worth individuals
  • A larger, more aligned team, with clear roles and shared targets
  • More regional trading underwriters, creating closer broker relationships
  • The launch of the JLR single vehicle offering, expanding options for high-value and specialist risks

“Everyone has a clear role and target for next year, and the size of the team means more alignment. That’s a real benefit for brokers - you know who you’re dealing with, and you know we’re working towards the same goals.”

What’s new since Gary’s been away?

Beyond new faces and a bigger team, Gary has seen ERS evolve in ways that directly benefit brokers:

  • Greater clarity of appetite
  • Stronger Private Client focus
  • A product roadmap built around quality risks rather than volume

But ultimately, as Gary puts it, “It’s just nice to be home.”

Looking ahead to 2026

With his blend of Private Client expertise, underwriting discipline and broker-side experience, Gary is perfectly placed to support brokers as ERS grows its Private Client proposition.

Welcome back, Gary.
